Figure installation. Installing food waste disposals requires a certain comfort level with both plumbing and electricity. If you're not handy, have it installed by a professional, especially if there's a dishwasher involved. Things get more complex hooking in the dishwasher.

Types. There are typically 2 types of disposers available, 'continuos feed' and 'batch feed'. Continuous feed model are activated by a separate wall switch. Batch feed models get filled up with food waste and then when the cover is installed, the cover activates the on/off switch. This latter design is safer where small children may be present in the household but generally cost more. They can also be a bit less handy to use.

Buy all the capacity you can. Having a bigger motor and better materials means longer disposer life. It makes more economic sense to buy bigger, especially if you must hire a plumber to install your disposer, which can easily triple your total costs.

Don't discount style. You're probably thinking, "Garbage disposers, stylish? Give me a break!" If you wouldn't mind spending a little more to achieve a designer look, you'll be amazed by the sleek, color-coordinated, optional air-switch operated, 1 horsepower machines that are available.

Check local codes. If you're on a septic system or live in an area with overloaded sewers, a disposer may not be an option. Check local codes before buying.

Material. If you're planning on keeping the disposal a while, look for models with a stainless steel 'grinding chamber' and shredder/grinder. Such material tends to last longer but is often only used on higher-end products.

Look for Reverse. Models which automatically reverse each time they start up will help to avoid jams. This feature is not usually found on lower-end or 'builder grade' units.
